A website is a tool for communicating. Design should flow from your individual goals. Yes it needs to look good but first it needs to work well, which includes designing for search engines and accessibility. In other words, you need more than just a pretty face on your site, though you'll get that too. I'll build you a site tailored to your business goals, designed to reflect your business identity and optimized for search engine friendliness.

Because I'm experienced.

Web design has been my full time job for years. I'm not guessing about what will make an effective and attractive website. I know that on time deliverability and good designer to client communications matter.

I do web design full time.

I don't it part time along with, print design, selling real estate, practicing massage therapy or whatever. The web is a quickly evolving beast that requires constant effort to keep up with. I do keep up. Making a website is relatively easy. Making an effective site requires professional expertise.

I'll be around to take care of your website.

I've been at this business for over half the life of the World Wide Web. I've seen a lot of "web designers" come and go. Very few make it past a couple of years of building occasional websites. Stability and reliability are good.

I've learned what works.

Another advantage of doing many dozens of sites over many years is that I've seen fads come and go. I've made my mistakes in the past so you won't pay for on the job training. I've found out what makes a website an effective business tool and will build that knowledge into your website.

I don't do print design.

That is a very different medium from web design, with different tools, methods and needs. Many print designers do websites. Very few print designers know the web well enough to take advantage of its unique strengths and technologies. I recognize that the reverse is true. I can do print layout but I won't do it as well as a full time graphic designer. I'm happy to refer you to some excellent graphics people if you need printed material.

Why not hire me?

If you want a full Flash site.

Flash is a wonderful technology and in spite of the complaints of many experienced web designers it occasionally is appropriate to build websites with Flash. That's not often, which is why I haven't taken the time to thoroughly learn the ins and outs of Flash. That said, I do use Flash capabilities like slide shows, embedded audio and video and other small movies. I use Flash in a site, not for a site.

If you need lots of custom programming.

I can write small programs but my expertise is more in the design arena than in hard core programming.

If you want the cheapest possible website.

For what I offer my sites tend towards the low end of the true professional spectrum, but I don't do cheap.

I appreciate the need to watch costs, but individualized web design takes more time than serving McWebsites. If you are fine with the sites churned out by site mills and don't care that your website looks just slightly different than others some designers mass produce, then you don't want me as your designer. Or, if you are fine with whatever the high school student you know who can make websites can create, then by all means go with the kid. Not everyone needs the effective business tool that a quality website provides.
